What is The Gospel?

The word "gospel" gets used a lot. In church, in music, in culture. But what does it actually mean? At its core, the gospel (the good news) is the best news ever announced: that God, in His love, made a way for broken people (all of us) to be restored to Him. It is the life, the death, and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. And the offer of eternal salvation that He makes to everyone who repents of their sins and believes He is their Lord and Savior. 

The first four books in the Bibles New Testament are referred to as The Gospels. In these four books: Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John we learn about Jesus’s birth, his teachings, his crucifixion, and his resurrection. 

The Problem: We're Separated from God

The Bible is clear that every person has sinned or fallen short of God's perfect standard (Romans 3:23). That sin creates a gap between us and a holy God, and the consequence is spiritual death and separation from Him (Romans 6:23). No amount of good works, religion, or self-improvement can close that gap on our own.

The Solution: Jesus

This is where the gospel, which literally means "good news", comes in. God didn't leave us in that broken state. He sent His Son, Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, to live the perfect life we couldn't live, and to die on the cross in our place (Romans 5:8). He took the punishment we deserved. He was then buried. Three days later, He rose from the dead. Defeating sin, death, and the grave. Proving that His sacrifice was accepted and that new life is possible (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).

The Response: Faith

The gospel is information, but also an invitation. God calls every person to respond with repentance (turning from sin) and faith (trusting in Jesus alone for salvation). It's not earned. It's received as a gift (Ephesians 2:8–9).

"For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life." — John 3:16

The Result: New Life

When someone puts their faith in Jesus, they're forgiven. When someone puts their faith in Jesus, they are transformed. And they become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17), adopted into God's family, and given the Holy Spirit as a guide and seal of that promise. You are one with Him. The gospel isn't just about where you go when you die; it's about how you live right now.

And now is the perfect time to grow your relationship with Him.  Here is a little prayer to help you take that first step. 

The Prayer of Salvation

Lord Jesus, I come to You today just as I am.

I believe You are the Son of God, that You died on the cross for my sins, and that You rose again on the third day.

I confess that I am a sinner and I need Your forgiveness. Wash me clean and make me new.

I open my heart and invite You in. Be my Lord and my Savior.

From this day forward, I choose to follow You. Guide my steps, renew my mind, and fill me with Your Holy Spirit.
