What Does the Bible Say Love Is?

Love is one of the most used words in the English language. We love pizza. We love a good playlist. We love our people and our pets. But somewhere between casual conversation and everyday life, the weight of what love actually is gets lost.
The Bible doesn't treat love lightly. Scripture defines it, demonstrates it, and demands it. Not as a feeling to chase, but as a way of life to choose.
Love Is Defined in 1 Corinthians 13
If you've ever been to a wedding, you've probably heard it. But 1 Corinthians 13 wasn't written for ceremonies. Instead it was written for the church, for everyday believers trying to figure out how to treat each other well.
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
1 Corinthians 13:4–7
Notice what's missing from that list: feelings. The Bible describes love almost entirely in actions and choices. Patience is a choice. Kindness is a choice. Letting go of a record of wrongs — that's one of the hardest choices a person can make. Biblical love is something you do.
Love Is Demonstrated at the Cross
The clearest picture of love in all of Scripture is an event.
"For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
John 3:16
God didn't just say He loved us. He proved it at the highest possible cost. Romans 5:8 puts it plainly: "But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us."

When asked which commandment was the greatest, Jesus didn't hesitate:
"Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself."
