Less of the World, More of God: Choosing a Life Set Apart
Share
"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them." 1 John 2:15
The world is loud. It is relentless. It has an opinion about how you should look, what you should want, who you should be, and what success means. And if you're not paying attention, it will shape you. Quietly, gradually, and convincingly into its image instead of God's.
This is the tension every believer lives in. You are in the world. You were placed here on purpose. But you are not meant to be of it.
"Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in them." 1 John 2:15
"They are not of the world, even as I am not of it." John 17:16
The call to be less is a call to be different within it and to carry something the world cannot manufacture: the actual presence and nature of God.
What the Bible Says About Worldliness
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind." Romans 12:2
The word conform here is syschematizo in Greek which means to pour yourself into a mold. The world has a mold. It is shaped by pride, consumption, comparison, self-promotion, and the pursuit of comfort above all else. God says: don't pour yourself into it.
"For everything in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — comes not from the Father but from the world." 1 John 2:16
Three categories: what the body craves, what the eyes want, and what the ego demands. These are the primary tools the world uses to pull believers away from God. Not always through obvious sin, but through subtle drift.
"You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world means enmity against God?" James 4:4
James doesn't soften it. Choosing the world's values over God's is spiritual unfaithfulness. That's the weight of what's at stake.
Biblical Examples
Abraham was called out of everything familiar: his country, his people, his father's household all to follow a God he was still getting to know (Genesis 12:1). Becoming more like God and less worldly often begins with a willingness to leave behind what is comfortable and familiar.
Daniel lived in the most powerful, most seductive empire of his time, Babylon. And refused to be conformed to it. He wouldn't eat the king's food (Daniel 1:8). He wouldn't stop praying when it was outlawed (Daniel 6:10). He was in Babylon but never of it. His distinctiveness made him indispensable.
Joseph was surrounded by Egyptian culture, power, and temptation. Including the direct sexual advances of Potiphar's wife. His response? "How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?" (Genesis 39:9). He ran. When the world offers you something that costs you your integrity, run. That's wisdom.
Jesus was the ultimate example of being in the world without being of it. He ate with sinners. He walked through marketplaces. He attended weddings. He engaged with culture at every level. Yet He never adopted its values, its fears, or its definition of greatness. He was fully present in the world and fully free from it.
What It Looks Like to Be More Like God
Becoming more like God and less like the world is about taking on His nature:
"But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." Galatians 5:22–23
The world offers counterfeits of all of these: pleasure instead of joy, tolerance instead of love, comfort instead of peace. The real thing is only grown through proximity to God.
"And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another." 2 Corinthians 3:18
You become what you behold. If you spend more time consuming the world than you do with God, you will look more like the world. If you spend more time beholding God, His Word, His character, His presence you will gradually take on His likeness.
Practical Steps to Live Set Apart
- Audit your influences. What voices are shaping your values most? Social media, culture, entertainment or the Word of God? Adjust accordingly.
- Identify where you've drifted. Worldliness often comes through slow compromise. Where have you made peace with something that doesn't reflect God? Name it. Address it.
- Practice holy discomfort. Choose the thing that aligns with God's values even when the world's option is easier, more rewarding, or more accepted.
- Let your standard be Scripture, not culture. Before asking "Is this normal?" ask "Is this godly?" Culture shifts. God doesn't.
- Pursue holiness as wholeness, not restriction. God's commands are not a cage. They are the design for human flourishing. Living set apart is a freer life, not a lesser one.
- Surround yourself with people pulling you upward. "Bad company corrupts good character." (1 Corinthians 15:33). Be intentional about community.
- Fast from the world periodically. Intentional breaks from social media, entertainment, or cultural noise create space to hear God more clearly.
- Be distinct without being distant. You are called to be light in the world not hidden from it. Let your distinctiveness draw people toward God.
A Prayer to Be Less Worldly and More Like God
Father God,
I confess that the world gets more of me than I'd like to admit. That I've shaped my opinions, my desires, my idea of success, and sometimes my identity more around what culture says than what You say. That I've drifted in places I didn't even notice until now.
Please forgive me.
I don't want to be conformed. I want to be transformed. I want to be someone that when people encounter me, they encounter something different. Something they can't quite name but know they want. Something of You.
Pull the world's grip off of me, Lord. Gently, thoroughly, and completely. Show me where I've made peace with what I should have resisted. Show me where I've chased what the world applauds instead of what You value. Show me where I look more like the culture than I look like Christ.
And then change me. Fruit by fruit. Thought by thought. Choice by choice.
I want to love what You love. To want what You want. To value what You value. To find my identity so rooted in You that the world's opinion of me loses its grip entirely.
Let my life look different. Like you. Help me to chase holiness. I genuinely want and am becoming more like You. Let holiness feel like home. Let Your presence be more satisfying than anything the world has ever offered me.
I am in this world. But I am Yours.
In Jesus' mighty, powerful, and majestic name,
Amen.
"But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God's special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light." 1 Peter 2:9
