Fear Not: The Two Words God Repeats Over 100 Times

Two Words. Three Hundred Times. One Message God Refuses to Stop Repeating.

"Fear not."

Two words. That's it. And yet, God saw fit to repeat them in one form or another over 100 times throughout the New Testament alone. Not once. Not twice. Three hundred times.

That's a Father who knows His children, knows what we face, and refuses to let us walk through it alone without first saying: I see you. I'm here. Don't be afraid.

If God says something once, it's worth paying attention to. If He says it 100 times, it's worth building your life around.

Why Fear Is Such a Big Deal

Fear isn't something small. It's not just butterflies before a presentation or nerves before a hard conversation. Fear, if left unchecked is a thief. It steals your peace, your purpose, your obedience, and your future.

Fear tells you the diagnosis is the final word. Fear tells you the relationship is too broken to restore. Fear tells you the dream God placed in your heart is too big, too risky, too late. Fear tells you to stay small, stay silent, stay safe.

And God — 100 times — says: No.

Biblical Examples of "Fear Not"

1. Abraham — When the Future Felt Impossible

"After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: 'Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your very great reward.'"
— Genesis 15:1

Abraham was old. His wife was barren. The promise of a son seemed laughable. And yet God showed up in a vision and said: Fear not. I am your shield. Not "I will give you a shield." I AM your shield. God Himself was the protection, the provision, the promise.

Whatever feels impossible in your life right now — God is not asking you to figure it out. He's asking you to trust the One who already has.

2. Moses — When the Enemy Was Closing In

"Moses answered the people, 'Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.'"
— Exodus 14:13

The Red Sea in front. Pharaoh's army behind. No way out — at least not by human logic. And Moses, standing in the gap, declared: Fear not. Stand firm. Watch God work.

Sometimes God doesn't remove the obstacle. He parts it. But you have to be standing at the water's edge to see it happen.

3. Joshua — When the Assignment Felt Too Big

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go."
— Joshua 1:9

Moses was gone. The mantle had passed. Joshua was staring down the task of leading an entire nation into unknown territory. And God didn't give him a strategy, He gave him a promise: I will be with you wherever you go.

The assignment God gives you will always be bigger than your ability. That's the point. His presence is the strategy.

4. Mary — When the Unexpected Arrived

"But the angel said to her, 'Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God.'"
— Luke 1:30

An angel. An impossible announcement. A life about to be turned completely upside down. And the first words spoken were: Fear not.

God's greatest assignments often arrive wrapped in the unexpected. The question is never whether you're ready. The question is whether you trust the One who called you.

5. The Disciples — When the Storm Raged

"But Jesus immediately said to them: 'Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.'"
— Matthew 14:27

They were in the middle of a storm. The waves were violent. And then they saw something walking toward them on the water. And they were terrified. Jesus' response? Take courage. It is I. Don't be afraid.

He didn't calm the storm first. He identified Himself first. Because when you know who's walking toward you in the storm, the storm loses its power.

6. Paul — When the Mission Felt Dangerous

"One night the Lord spoke to Paul in a vision: 'Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you...'"
— Acts 18:9–10

Paul was in Corinth. The opposition was fierce. The temptation to go quiet, to pull back, to protect himself. It was real. And God showed up in the night and said: Don't be afraid. Keep speaking. I am with you.

Your voice matters. Your obedience matters. Don't let fear silence what God has called you to say.

7. John — When the Revelation Was Overwhelming

"When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: 'Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.'"
— Revelation 1:17

Even in the final book of the Bible, even in the midst of apocalyptic vision, Jesus reaches down, places His hand on John, and says: Fear not.

From Genesis to Revelation, the message never changes. God is consistent. His character is consistent. His love is consistent. And His command to His people is consistent: Do not be afraid.

What "Fear Not" Really Means

Here's what's important to understand: God is not dismissing your fear. He's not saying your situation isn't hard or that the threat isn't real. He's saying something far more powerful:

I am greater than what you fear.

Every "fear not" in Scripture is followed by a reason. Fear not — for I am with you. Fear not — I am your shield. Fear not — I am the First and the Last. The command is always anchored in the character of God. He doesn't just tell you not to be afraid. He tells you why you don't have to be.

And that changes everything.

Living "Fear Not" Every Day

Fear not is not a feeling. It's a choice — a daily, sometimes moment-by-moment decision to anchor your trust in who God is rather than what you see.

It looks like opening your Bible when the anxiety hits instead of scrolling. It looks like praying out loud when the fear is loudest. It looks like taking the step God called you to take even when your knees are shaking. It looks like wearing your faith boldly, not because life is perfect, but because you know the One who holds it.

"For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind."
— 2 Timothy 1:7

That spirit of fear? It's not from God. Which means you don't have to carry it.

A Prayer for the Fearful Heart

Father,

I come to You with the fears I've been carrying. The ones I've named and the ones I haven't. The ones that wake me up at 3 AM and the ones that quietly follow me through the day.

You have said "fear not" more times than I can count. And today, I choose to believe You mean it for me, in this moment, and in this situation.

I release the fear of the unknown. I release the fear of failure. I release the fear of what others think, of what might happen, of what I might lose. I lay it all at Your feet.

You are my shield. You are my strength. You are the First and the Last, and nothing in my life is outside of Your reach or beyond Your redemption.

Give me the courage to stand firm at the water's edge. Give me the faith to step out of the boat. Give me the boldness to keep speaking when fear tells me to go silent.

I choose trust over terror. I choose faith over fear. I choose You.
