What Does It Mean to Be a Disciple?

Jesus made His invitation clear:

“Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 (NIV)

Being a disciple means learning from Jesus and allowing Him to shape every part of your life. It’s not about having all the answers. It’s about faithfully walking with Him each day.

Living Out Your Faith Every Day

The Bible reminds us:

“And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.” Colossians 3:17 (NIV)

Whether you’re studying, working, creating content, raising a family, or spending time with friends, your everyday actions can honor God. Simple choices by showing kindness, telling the truth, extending forgiveness, and serving others. These all become acts of discipleship.

Stay Rooted in God’s Word

Spiritual growth comes from spending time with God.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” Psalm 119:105 (NIV)

Reading Scripture daily helps us navigate life with wisdom and reminds us of God’s promises. Even a few minutes each morning can refocus your heart on what matters most.

Pray Continually

Prayer doesn’t have to be complicated or limited to a specific place.

“Pray continually.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17 (NIV)

Talk to God throughout your day. Before a meeting, during a difficult conversation, while driving, or when celebrating answered prayers. A growing relationship with Christ is built through ongoing communication.

Love People Like Jesus Did

Jesus said:

“By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.” John 13:35 (NIV)

One of the clearest signs of discipleship is genuine love. Encouraging a friend, helping a neighbor, listening without judgment, or extending grace to someone who has hurt you reflects the heart of Christ. Do everything with love. 

Be an Example Wherever You Are

The Apostle Paul encouraged young believers:

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity." 1 Timothy 4:12 (NIV)

You don't have to be in a pulpit or on a platform to influence others for Christ. Your daily life — the way you carry yourself, treat people, and respond to hardship speaks volumes. Be bold in your faith, even in the ordinary.

A Prayer for Everyday Discipleship

Lord Jesus, thank You for the gift of another day to follow You. Help me to see every ordinary moment as an opportunity to reflect Your love, Your truth, and Your grace. When I am distracted, draw me back to You. When I am discouraged, remind me of Your promises. Teach me to walk with You in the small things, knowing that faithfulness in the everyday is where discipleship is truly built. May my life: my words, my work, my relationships bring glory to Your name. Amen.
